Borgund Stav Church

Borgund

Borgund Stav Church.

Visited Borgund Stave Church on our trip to Flåm, what a sight! 📸 This remarkable church was built around 1150–1200 CE and is considered one of Norway’s most authentic and best-preserved stave churches. Some highlights: Its construction uses the traditional stave method: vertical timber staves rising from a stone foundation. The exterior features tiered rooflines, carved dragon-head ridge posts and richly decorated portals blending Viking-era and early Christian art. It served as a parish church until 1868 when it was replaced and turned into a museum, thus preserving its historic fabric. A little tip for anyone visiting: take time to admire the proportions and the roof details they’re extraordinary.
